SAN FRANCISCO, CA (OCTOBER 27, 2015) – AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design STAFF WRITER –

Selected ahead of 30 other submissions, The American Institute of Architecture, California Council, and PG&E announced late last week (October 23, 2015) AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design as the Professional Category Citation Award Winner at the fifth annual Architecture at Zero, Zero Net Energy Building Design Competition. AXIS was awarded the distinction for their design, “Alveo.”

Judged by a distinguished panel of architecture, engineering, and design experts, this year’s competition challenged entrants with the design of a hypothetical mixed use and multi-family residential building at the University of California Mission Bay Campus. Paramount for each submission was the requirement that each proposed building be a Zero Net Energy building, producing at least as much clean or renewable energy as it uses over the course of a year when accounted for at site level.

“Addressing the challenge of designing buildings with reduced energy requirements is something we’ve embraced at AXIS,” states Cory Creath, Principal Architect at AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design. “From our hotel projects to our multi-family architectural designs, reducing energy use simply makes good business sense. That said, designing a building of this scale with zero net energy usage was a notable challenge,” Creath continued. Creath credits AXIS’ innovative and efficient use of space, its integration of progressive and responsive control technologies, and the use of the latest recycled and renewable building materials for their design’s success.

For the competition, AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design teamed up with EBS Consultants, a San Francisco-based firm focused on advising developers, engineers, and architects on the design and construction of green buildings. Overseeing AXIS’ submission was AXIS Principal Architect Cory Creath.  Leading AXIS’ design was AXIS’ Byung Kang, with Jiamin Liang lending significant support.
