Congratulations Byung! Byung Kang, Hotel Renovation Architect, Joins AXIS Architecture + Design’s Team of Principals
By AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design Staff Writer
AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design, the San Francisco-based and noted hospitality and multi-family architectural design firm, is pleased to announce Byung Kang, Senior Associate Architect, as the firm’s newest partner. Byung joins Principal Architects and Designers Cory Creath, Shawn Alexander, and Rory Carroll as firm partners.
Joining AXIS in 2013, and bringing with him over a decade of experience in senior design positions at HOK, DES, and Steinberg Architects, Byung has led the AXIS architectural team on a number of projects, including AXIS’ Aloft LAX and Fairfield Inn and Suites at LAX hotel renovation projects, and the firm’s Bancroft and Dutton Avenue multi-family housing projects.
Characterizing his approach to architectural design as “creative practicality,” Byung was an immediate fit upon joining the AXIS team. “Our firm prides itself on delivering beautiful yet common sense architectural solutions,” states Cory Creath, Principal Architect at AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design. “One of Byung’s unique strengths from the start has been his ability to make functional spaces beautiful. By their nature, large-scale commercial or institutional projects can easily default to uninspiring designs – Byung on the other hand has an uncanny ability to make even the most functional spaces uniquely welcoming.”
Exemplifying that expertise, Byung includes leading the AXIS team awarded the 2015 American Institute of Architecture California Council’s Architecture at Zero, Zero Net Energy Building Design Competition for its mixed use and multi-family “Alveo” design, and his winning submission in the 2012 Korean Winning Design Competition for his design of the Multi-Purpose Hall at Dongduk Women’s University in Seoul, Korea.
